Pierre-Ambroise-François Choderlos de Laclos' novel »Les liaisons dangereuses« (»Dangerous Liaisons«) is about the outgoing Ancien régime. He created a major work of French and world literature alike. Almost 200 years after its publication in 1782, Heiner Müller wrote his contemporary adaptation. He has radically shortened the work to concentrate on the main conflict between the Marquise de Merteuil, her ex-lover, the Vicomte de Valmont, and the fateful encounter with the two women Volanges and Tourvel. Under Heiner Müller's bold approach, the complex and intriguing plot becomes brutal and ruthless, eventually culminating in an ultimate duel between man and woman. Fought with language and rhetoric, driven by lust, sex, contempt and narrated with surprising humour.
