»I have not seen a single slave in Qatar.« With this quote, Franz Beckenbauer summed up the attitude of many people in the West. All of us have slaves. That is nothing new. The question is, why do we continue to consume products that were de facto produced with slave labour, such as shoes, clothing, electronics, football World Cups? What are the mechanisms that enable us in our Western security to hide the reality, which, let's face it, we know very well, and continue to live at the expense of others? How can this echo chamber of selective perception still exist? Maybe we just have to face a bitter truth. We could not live without slaves. Our slaves are our lifestyle products.
